Our university is in Antarctica

The first team of 9 people was set up for scientific base studies to be set up in Antarctica. Within the scope of the Antarctic Science Base Project, the Research Team, which consists of Hitit University, ITU and KTU lecturers, is going to return to our country in the first week of April by carrying out many scientific studies for feasibility studies for Turkey's science base in Antarctica.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy who is ITU Polar Researches Application and Research Center (PolReC) Manager said that the team would first go to Santiago, then Punta Arenas, and after going to King George Island in Antarctica, they would carry out scientific studies on the leased research ship.

She also added “70 per cent of the world's freshwater reserves are in Antarctica. During the 30-day expedition, we will set foot in the continental regions of Antarctica. Currently Antarctica is a continent that is not owned by any world country, but is ruled under the flag of 53 world countries. While 29 countries are in consultative status, the remaining 24 countries are observer status. As the Republic of Turkey, we passed the observer status in 1995. We have stayed in the status of observer because of the less frequent scientific work that has been done since that day. Moving to consultant status is important in the following sense. When there are decisions to be made about the continent, being in this mechanism is seen as a very big strategy by world countries. However, this continent is a continent on which consulting countries have right to vote. In this sense, the only condition for passing to the consultant status is the scientific study, evaluation and scientific studies of the Antarctic Continental dedicated to peace and science. We are also aiming at establishing a Turkish science base in the same contribution and strategy and in order to be in this system, which will open the less frequent studies we have done to Turkish scientists.”

Stating that the scientists took place in the reseach from Hitit University, ITU and KTU, Özsoy said “We would like to thank Mr. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for all the support given to the project realized in the Presidency of the Presidency and to the support of Faruk Özlü gentleman of Science, Industry and Technology Minister and all the support we have received from this ministry in the same way.”
