3D Printers in Our Curriculum

With the "Three Dimensional Printer Making Techniques" course, our Engineering Faculty's Department of Mechanical Engineering students get to know and learn a new technology in our University, which constantly refreshes its curriculum by taking into account the technological changes and developments in the world and our country.

As is known, nowadays, using layered production technologies, products with more flexible designs can be produced with much less material input than traditional machining methods. The three-dimensional printers that are based on this technology were first used in 80's and developed as fast as the day-to-day. As a result of these developments, the industrial sector of tiered production technology continues to grow.

3D printer widely used in the industry; polymers and metal products. Such machines are used in 79% prototyping in our country. SLS and SLM machines are the most common types of 3D printers used in the manufacture of metal products. Today, R & D studies on layered production technology are generally concentrated on the production of metal parts.

According to the global market data obtained from the "3D Paradigm Shift Research Project: Project for Changing the Paradigm of Production," coordinated by the Ministry of Development, the 2016 sector share of five leading suppliers of 3D printers in the global market constitutes 80% of 2016 sector share. The worldwide maturity level of the use of 3D printer in 2016 is 24%. The use of this technology in direct production is now 5% and in 2021 this value is predicted to be 38%.

The existing 3-dimensional printer market in our country is made up of foreign origin products and it is estimated that domestic brands will get a reasonable share from the market in the coming days and this share will increase in the coming years.

Today, in the industrial and architectural design, civil engineering, automotive industry, aerospace industry, medical and dentistry industry and small home appliances, this technology is used by the Engineering Faculty students to learn in the classroom.
