Excavation and Survey Workshop Held with Strong Participation

Current archaeological research concerning the regions of Central Anatolia, the Mediterranean, Marmara, the Black Sea, and Central Asia/Kazakhstan was discussed at the “Excavation and Survey Workshop” organized within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. During the program, studies centered in Çorum, Niğde, Bursa, Antalya, Karabük, and Kazakhstan were evaluated, and scientific data related to different periods and cultures were examined in a comparative and holistic manner.

Within the scope of the workshop, researchers shared the 2025 excavation results from Alaca Höyük, Boğazköy-Hattusha, Ortaköy-Šapinuwa, Bekçitepe, Porsuk Höyük, Limyra, and Paşalar, as well as the latest scientific findings from the Eskipazar Prehistoric Period Survey and the İnegöl Survey. The program also included discussions on interdisciplinary studies such as Hatti and Hittite culture, Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlements, Classical period urban research, zooarchaeology, paleo-faunal analyses, anthropological investigations, and archaeological surveys.

The opening session of the workshop was moderated by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tolga Çırak. Presentations were delivered by Prof. Dr. Tayfun Yıldırım, faculty member of the Department of Archaeology at Ankara University Faculty of Languages, History and Geography and Director of the Alaca Höyük Excavations, and Dr. Lecturer Önder İpek, Director of the Šapinuwa Excavations.

The closing session was conducted by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Zekeriya Işık, Prof. Dr. Aygül Süel from the Department of Archaeology, and Prof. Dr. Tayfun Yıldırım from Ankara University Faculty of Languages, History and Geography.

A total of 15 researchers presented at the workshop. It was noted that the participants currently serve as excavation directors at eight different excavations, director of one archaeological survey, and deputy excavation directors at two excavations. General evaluations regarding the workshop process were also shared during the session.

Our Dean, Prof. Dr. Zekeriya Işık, presented certificates of participation to the faculty members who contributed to the program with their presentations. He also thanked all academic and administrative staff members, as well as the students, who contributed to the workshop.
