Newspaper Reading and Distribution Activity by Media and Communication Program Students

Hitit University Vocational School of Social Sciences, Department of Marketing and Advertising, Media and Communication Program students organized a newspaper reading activity on January 10, Working Journalists’ Day. With this event, they both highlighted the importance of the journalism profession and shared their professional knowledge and experience with fellow university students.

During the event, held at the Vocational Schools Campus, local, regional, and national newspapers were distributed free of charge by Media and Communication Program students. Faculty members Lecturer Ali Aşır and Lecturer Gökhan Şenyurt, along with many students from different programs and departments, participated in the activity.

The event gave Media and Communication students the opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into practice. They explained to their peers topics such as front-page design, placement of news articles, use of headlines and subheadings, agenda-setting processes, newspaper mastheads, opinion columns, supplements, puzzle pages, and stages of news production. They emphasized that a newspaper is not only a tool for delivering news but also a professional media product shaped by specific editorial processes.

In this interactive activity, participants examined newspapers together, comparing the news language, page design, and content choices of different publications. This allowed students to closely observe the techniques of news presentation in print media and gain awareness of media literacy.

The event provided Media and Communication Program students with valuable opportunities to improve their communication skills, gain experience in public presentation, and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. At the same time, it helped students from other departments understand the functioning of print media, the processes of news production, and the social role of journalism.

Organized by Hitit University’s Media and Communication Program, the event drew attention to the meaning and importance of Working Journalists’ Day while serving as a practical educational activity that supported students’ professional development.
