Our Mission

Guided by the understanding that the recent and distant past of Turkish and world history can be explored from a scientific, holistic and comparative perspective, whilst actively engaging with other disciplines within the social sciences; to cultivate responsible individuals who can contribute new insights and perspectives to existing knowledge; who possess the capacity to approach events, phenomena and processes critically and objectively; who know and understand the people of this country; who are capable of conducting analyses of the past, present and future; and who uphold universal human values. To understand and analyse the geography of Turkish history and its social, political, economic and cultural characteristics and stages; to elucidate its place within world history and its mutual interactions with other societies; to utilise the insights provided by historical knowledge and experience for the benefit of humanity and the nation’s future; and to carry out research and educational activities whilst being fully aware of the importance of knowledge and one’s social responsibilities.

Our Vision

Recognising that contemporary methods, conditions and perspectives play a crucial role in the study of the past, it is vital to update both knowledge production and the education provided using modern methods and techniques. In this regard, it is essential that Turkey—a vital part of world history and civilisation—contributes to the universal body of knowledge, science and civilisation. We aim to be a department that works whilst always bearing in mind that the path to making this contribution lies in enhancing the cultural literacy of the nation’s people through a critical and innovative perspective.
