Program accreditation in higher education is a process that evaluates and certifies whether university-level academic programs meet established quality standards. During this process, the compliance of academic programs with specific national and international criteria is assessed by independent accreditation agencies. Accreditation is carried out to enhance the quality of education and to support continuous improvement and development within programs.

Primary Objectives of Program Accreditation

  • Quality Assurance: Accreditation demonstrates that programs comply with defined quality standards, instilling confidence among students, employers, academic staff, and society.

  • Recognition and Validity: Accreditation ensures that the education received by graduates is recognized nationally and internationally, thereby enhancing graduates’ competitiveness in the labor market.

  • Continuous Improvement: The accreditation process encourages universities and programs to regularly evaluate themselves and implement improvement initiatives, ensuring a continuous rise in educational quality.

  • Inclusivity and Transparency: Accreditation ensures that program content and outcomes are publicly accessible, enabling students and their families to make informed choices.

Accreditation Process and Steps

a) Application and Preparation:
The university completes preliminary preparations and submits an application to the accreditation agency. At this stage, each program prepares its self-assessment report.

b) Self-Assessment Report (SAR):
This report presents the program’s strengths and weaknesses, outlines its objectives, and provides detailed information on various aspects of the program. Key elements include education quality, curriculum structure, faculty competence, and student support services.

c) Site Visit and Evaluation:
Representatives of the accreditation agency (typically academics and industry experts) conduct an on-site visit to examine the program. During this visit, course content, faculty, student facilities, and quality processes are reviewed in detail, and meetings are held with various units and stakeholders.

d) Evaluation Report and Decision:
Following the assessment, a report prepared by the evaluation team is submitted to the accreditation board to determine the program’s accreditation status. Programs may receive full accreditation, conditional accreditation, or denial of accreditation.

e) Continuous Monitoring and Re-Accreditation:
Once the accreditation period (usually 2–5 years) expires, the program must undergo re-evaluation. This process ensures the sustainability and ongoing quality of the program.
