A faculty member from our department spoke about combating addiction on TRT Çukurova Radio.
Associate Professor Dr. Serpil YILMAZ, a faculty member of the Nursing Department at Hitit University Faculty of Health Sciences, was a guest on the "Hayatın İçinden" (From the Heart of Life) program, broadcast live on TRT Çukurova Radio on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The program, which aired at 12:00 PM, comprehensively addressed the topic of "Addictions and Raising Awareness in Society," one of the biggest public health problems of the modern age.
During the program, Associate Professor Dr. YILMAZ drew attention to the definition of addiction, emphasizing that it is not a lack of willpower but a chronic brain disease. She stated that addiction creates a "domino effect" that spreads from the individual to the family and the entire society, highlighting the importance of awareness for maintaining social harmony.
She noted that behavioral addictions such as technology, social media, and online gambling are rapidly increasing alongside tobacco and substance addiction.
She gave examples of the "Iceland Model," successfully implemented worldwide to protect young people, and local peer education programs. Serpil YILMAZ reminded listeners that they should approach their children not as judgmental "detectives," but as loving "observers."
At the end of the program, YILMAZ offered practical suggestions they could apply in daily life; emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and saying "no," and stating that spending at least one hour a day away from screens, making eye contact with loved ones, is the strongest protection against addiction.
