Establishment Information

The opening of the PhD Program in History within the Institute of Social Sciences of our university was approved at the Meeting of the Higher Education Executive Board dated 29 May 2019. The program admitted its first students in August 2019.

Program Profile

The academic staff of the Department of History consists of 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 8 Assistant Professors, and 1 Research Assistant with a PhD. The language of instruction is Turkish.
The main research areas of the department include Ottoman History, General Turkic History, Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History, History of the Republic of Türkiye, and Ancient History.

The primary goals of the department are to apply and teach modern techniques of historical research and writing; to enhance students’ ability to utilize historical sources; and to provide comprehensive approaches that help clarify historical periods, geographical regions, and complex historical problems.

Full time.

Assessment and Evaluation

The primary teaching methods of the program include lectures, seminars, and workshops. Assessment and evaluation methods vary by course; detailed information regarding examinations and assignments can be found in each course’s Course Information Form.

Recognition of Prior Learning

A Master’s degree is recognized.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the PhD Program in History, students must successfully complete a program consisting of 8 courses (24 credits), including 1 compulsory course, a seminar, the PhD qualifying examination, dissertation proposal, and dissertation research.

Students who complete a total of 240 ECTS credits—30 ECTS per semester—and successfully defend their dissertation are considered to have successfully completed the PhD Program in History.
