PhD Program

The PhD Program in Islamic History and Arts was approved at the Executive Board Meeting of the Council of Higher Education on 2 May 2018.

The aim of the PhD Program in the Department of Islamic History and Arts is to examine the historical trajectory of Islam from its emergence to the present, with particular focus on the major political, social, cultural, literary, and artistic developments that have shaped Islamic history. The program seeks to train highly qualified scholars who possess the competence to conduct advanced academic research, who are knowledgeable about the key issues of the field and capable of producing solutions, and who embrace scientific inquiry and academic ethics. It aims to foster doctoral-level researchers who demonstrate critical thinking, intellectual productivity, and academic engagement. In addition to Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, the program also encourages the use of Western languages in interdisciplinary research.

Another central objective of the Department of Islamic History and Arts is to contribute to the broader body of scholarly knowledge by conducting academic research on Islamic history and civilization in all its dimensions, generating new findings, and disseminating them within the academic community at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Program Structure

For students admitted with a master’s degree with thesis, the PhD program consists of a minimum of seven courses (at least 21 credits), a seminar, a qualifying examination, a thesis proposal, and a dissertation, corresponding to a minimum of 240 ECTS credits, with no academic year containing fewer than 60 ECTS credits.

For students admitted with an undergraduate degree, the program requires a minimum of fourteen courses corresponding to at least 42 credits, along with a seminar, qualifying examination, thesis proposal, and dissertation, totaling a minimum of 300 ECTS credits.

Duration of Study

Excluding any preparatory period, the duration of the PhD program for students admitted with a master’s degree with thesis is eight semesters beginning from the semester of initial course registration, regardless of whether the student enrolls in subsequent semesters. The maximum period for completion is twelve semesters.

For students admitted with an undergraduate degree, the regular duration is ten semesters, with a maximum completion period of fourteen semesters.

Upon successful completion of the program and fulfillment of all qualification requirements, students are awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Islamic History and Arts.
