15.2.1 Activities related to sustainable use of land

Our university systematically supports and organizes activities that encourage the protection and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems — especially forests and natural areas. For example, through the “Sapling Planting Activity”, students and staff come together on campus and environs to contribute to the expansion of forest areas. In addition, during “5 June World Environment Day” events, environmental awareness is raised and community participation is encouraged to ensure the conservation and sustainability of natural areas and ecosystems.

15.2.3 Protecting and increasing the biodiversity of existing ecosystems

Our university engages directly in research and practice activities aimed at protecting biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem health. For example, within the project titled “Let the Bees Live, Secure the Future Project”, efforts focus on preserving bee colonies, spreading scientific methods in beekeeping, and encouraging youth participation — thus addressing both species protection and ecosystem integrity. Such initiatives are significant in terms of monitoring local plant and animal species, developing models for the conservation of threatened organisms, and raising community awareness.

15.2.4 Educational programs about ecosystems

Our university offers educational and awareness programmes on wild flora and fauna and terrestrial ecosystems for local communities and students. For example: Within the “Let the Bees Live, Secure the Future Project”, emphasis is placed on the conservation of biodiversity via local bee species and beekeeping activities. During the “Children and Environment Activity”, students receive training on waste management, water conservation, garden-farming and environmental awareness; thus raising awareness about the protection of natural ecosystems. Through these initiatives, the university contributes to enabling various segments of society to gain knowledge about natural areas, wild species and ecosystem management.

15.2.5 Sustainable land management for agriculture and tourism

Alaca Avni Çelik Vocational School organizes the National Agriculture and Food Workshop annually. Local government representatives, academics, public institution officials, and students participate in the workshop, which addresses important issues in agriculture and food. This event contributes to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and the protection of terrestrial ecosystems.

15.3.5 Cooperation for shared land ecosystems

Our university actively collaborates with local communities in efforts to protect shared land ecosystems.

Academics and students from İskilip Vocational School participated in a sapling planting event organized by the İskilip Forest Management Directorate in the Kaynarca neighborhood of Kılıçdere Village as part of the “İskilip Life Project.”

In addition, regular environmental cleanup activities are carried out.

15.4.2 Plastic waste reduction policy

Hitit University's plastic waste reduction policy covers the management of plastic waste generated during the university's education, research and development, production, and living space activities. The goal is to prevent waste generation by staff and students, and if unavoidable, minimize plastic waste, recycle it, and, where possible, ensure energy recovery. In this context, waste collection, separation, and recycling processes are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation. Furthermore, experiences gained are shared with other public institutions in the city, fostering a culture of waste management from the micro to the macro.

Within this scope, during the regularly held Children’s University activities at our institution, children are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, thereby preventing the generation of plastic waste.

15.4.3 Hazardous waste disposal policy

Hitit University's hazardous waste disposal policy covers the management of hazardous waste generated during the university's educational, research and development, production, and residential activities. The goal is to prevent the generation of hazardous waste by staff and students, minimize it if unavoidable, dispose of it safely, and ensure recycling or energy recovery without harming the environment or human health. These processes are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation, and experiences gained are shared with other public institutions in the city, fostering a culture of hazardous waste management awareness.
